The objective of this course is to improve tissue viability of the lower limb within Residential Aged Care Facilities (RACFs). The course covers the properties and ageing process of the skin and nails, before outlining risk factors that can compromise skin integrity – foot deformities, hyperkeratotic lesions, nail pathologies, and the ‘At Risk Foot’.
The aim of this training is NOT to provide comprehensive foot care and wound care knowledge, or to increase scope of practice (thus adding to the already strained care burden) of RACF employees. The intention is to equip RACF staff with the knowledge and skills needed to identify existing and potential foot health issues, facilitating timely and appropriate referrals to an available resource within the facility – the Podiatrist.
